We just spoke with a representative of Next Scale Stop and he indicated that this product will be beneficial for commercial boiler applications especially if the equipment has a blow down process. As I understand the blow down process is to evacuate the concentration of Total Dissolved Solids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_dissolved_solids) and hardness. Physical Water Treatment
TAC falls into a category often referred to as “physical water treatment” (PWT). The primary goals of PWT are to:
- Avoid the use of chemical additives.
- Minimize or avoid discharge water, regenerates, and waste water.
- Avoid pollution and disposal costs.
- Minimize capital costs and ongoing maintenance.
The technology behind TAC treatment systems was developed in Germany about 15 years ago and used throughout Europe before coming to the United States about eight years ago.
TAC media start out as polymeric beads (resin) in the 20-to-40-mesh size range. Catalytically active sites, or templates, are imprinted on the beads’ surface through a batch-coating process.
PWT works by changing the physical characteristics of a solution, with little or no change in the solution’s chemical composition. PWT is used chiefly to reduce water hardness (calcium carbonate) in plumbing systems, appliances, and equipment (boilers, water heaters, dish washers, automotive- and process-washing equipment), valves, and other components that generate or use heated water….
TAC is the mechanism behind bio-mineralization—the growth of bone structures in the human body—and commonly is used by pharmaceutical companies to create medicines.
TAC media were submitted to DVGW (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water), whose standard W 512 is considered the most rigorous and challenging accredited standard for certifying PWT systems for scale-reduction efficiency. The media achieved a scale-prevention efficiency of more than 99 percent for both recirculation-hot-water and single-pass-cold-water protocols……
Used in an up-flow design, TAC media are not subject to low-flow channeling or high-flow pressure drops. Pressure drop at peak flow rate is less than 4 psi. Like other resins, the media are subject to water-chemistry limitations, such as chlorine, iron, manganese, tannins, and pH.
The effective life of TAC media is three years and is dependent on neither the volume nor the hardness of water…..
Protecting a plumbing system from damaging lime deposits can incur considerable expense—both initially and throughout the life of the system—for any commercial property.
For many years, commercial-grade water softeners were the only proven technology for scale protection. Water softeners, however, require electricity to operate, take up precious space in mechanical rooms, demand hundreds of gallons of water for draining during backwash and regeneration cycles, and require salt or an even more expensive alternative (potassium chloride) for performance to be maintained.
TAC can be used in point-of-entry applications to protect whole buildings on the hot and the cold side and protect equipment that is more prone to scale buildup. Peak flow rate is all that is required to size a commercial TAC system.

There is not currently a recognized standard in the U.S. for scale prevention products other than traditional ion exchange softeners. The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials has been sponsoring the development of such a standard for more than seven years with the support of representatives from the industry, including from the Water Quality Assn. (WQA), NSF Intl., Battelle Memorial Institute, Arizona State University and more.
Creating a standard that will give customers confidence in products that achieve certification is a complicated task due to the wide variety of technologies that must be considered. It is likely that it will be several more years before a standard, once released, becomes widely accepted, considering the highly complicated nature of the subject.
On Feb.27, a study sponsored by the WateReuse Research Foundation titled “Evaluation of Alternatives to Domestic Ion Exhchange Water Softeners” was officially published. The project was funded by the cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale, Ariz.: the Santa Clara Valley Water District (San Jose, Calif.); the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County; and the WateReuse Research Foundation. The study evaluated four different technologies on their abilities to control or prevent hard water scale on heating elements using several different water qualities. Official versions of this study can be acquired for a modest fee at www.wateruse.org.
The WateReuse study recognizes that not every possible product and technology and aspect of water hardness were evaluated. It would be virtually impossible, not to mention cost prohibitive, to do so. However, it is a valuable resource that can further the education and understanding of water professionals from both the private and public sectors. Without a doubt, the study will fuel the growth of the market for alternatives.
The Future and Expectations
Ion exchange is not going away. It is a proven technology that has been meeting the needs of consumers for more than 50 years. The term “softener” connotes a water quality perception with which many consumers identify. Alternative products that use “softener” in their product descriptions may face challenges in meeting the expectations of the consumers who purchase them. Conversely, many consumers who purchase alternatives to traditional softeners will be delighted with the products that offer demonstrable performance. As a water treatment professional, you should know the differences in product performance, and be able to provide solutions that meet the needs and expectations of your customers.

Right away I started thinking about a name for this product; and the first thing that came to my mind is
possible name for this product : lead killer
By utilizing this product name – included within our marketing picture can be my father’s double barrel 12 gauge shotgun. We always seek to utilize my father’s accouterments and his artifacts (boots, cowboy hats and guns ‘there are many’) when developing marketing media and ideas for our new product and processes. Just a thought.
This situation first came to my attention while reading the newspaper in the early part of January. I waited to post this Flint Michigan ‘lead in the water’ information on our web page out of compassion (this is an awful situation). However, when I learned this same problem may exist in other regions (low PH water is causing lead to leach from plumbing ‘and getting into people’s water’); we decided to develop a product ‘to abolish lead from water’.

The Lead removal options: 9×48 resin tank with clack backwashing valve with 1/3 of cubic ft of KDF backwashing at a rate of 10 gallons per minute. The KDF will need replacing at least every 5 years.

…..a USA TODAY NETWORK investigation has identified almost 2,000 additional water systems spanning all 50 states where testing has shown excessive levels of lead contamination over the past four years.
… Many of the highest reported lead levels were found at schools and day cares. A water sample at a Maine elementary school was 42 times higher than the EPA limit of 15 parts per billion, while a Pennsylvania preschool was 14 times higher, records show. At an elementary school in Ithaca, N.Y., one sample tested this year at a stunning 5,000 ppb of lead, the EPA’s threshold for “hazardous waste.”
